Work Program

Gardening

An essential element of the educational philosophy at Buxton is Work Program. It is based on the belief that personal growth and community well-being are rooted in meaningful and creative work. Forestry and gardening, construction projects, help in the office and library, cooking, redecorating, and handyman tasks are examples of jobs done by Buxton students.

Because the school is primarily heated with wood, students coordinate a year-long plan that involves timbering, lumberjacking, splitting and storing the wood, and stoking the stoves.

What is done and who does it are always changing, but it is a consistent, direct challenge to everyone that Work Program can and must fill a major part of the needs of Buxton.
