Buxton Hosts Successful Educational Consultant Tour
In October, Buxton had 14 new visitors to its campus: They were all educational consultants who were here as part of a Berskshire boarding-school tour organized by our very own director of recruitment, Margo Cardner. Educational consultants are professionals who help families find suitable schools for their children, and every year Buxton enrolls kids who were referred to us by consultants. To stay current on their knowledge and understanding of schools, consultants try to visit them when they can. Tours like the one we organized help these busy folks see several schools in a short period of time, while they also have some fun getting to know each other and the teachers and administrators of the schools they are visiting.
The Fall 2009 tour included Buxton, Miss Hall’s, Berkshire School, and Bard College at Simon’s Rock. The consultants spent their first evening at a dinner hosted in the Buxton library, where they were introduced to the four schools, plus a new gap year program modeled on the Buxton all-school trip and run by former Buxton faculty member Timothy Shuker-Haines. The next day, they spent time at Berkshire and Simon’s Rock, capped off with a dinner hosted by all the schools at the Gramercy Bistro in North Adams. The following morning, they came to Buxton, where they had breakfast with students and teachers, toured the campus with kids, and convened in the Billiard Room for a question-and-answer session. Before heading off for their final stop at Miss Halls, the consultants left Buxton with lots of materials about the school and a package of student-made Buxton granola.
By all accounts, the consultants had a great time and were enormously impressed by the school and, particularly, the students. One of the consultants wrote about the tour on her blog. Her entry on Buxton was great. She clearly loved the school and, more importantly, she “got” it. The link to her post on Buxton is here:
