At Buxton, we cultivate a well-rounded, rigorous academic experience designed to inspire and challenge every student in every subject. Our core curriculum includes: 

• Four years of English 
• Four years of mathematics 
• Four years of science 
• Two years of laboratory science
• A minimum of three years of a foreign language 
• One year of US History
• Two years of social science 
• One year of health science

A Holistic Approach to Learning

Buxton students are challenged and taught to be engaged, critical thinkers through text, creativity, art, and discussion. They receive support in their growth and are encouraged to become analytical thinkers, collaborators, artists, and active citizens. At Buxton, we move away from conventional honors and advanced placement classes to foster a more holistic approach to learning. We emphasize dynamic, engaging, hands-on, and experiential learning, rather than focusing on test scores. Classes are conducted in a seminar-style format, promoting rich discussion and collaboration around the table, where each student’s voice can be heard and they learn to listen to one another. 

We are dedicated to meeting each student where they are and guiding them to reach their goals by fostering a collaborative educational experience that emphasizes independence, curiosity, and a deep love of learning. 

Opportunities Beyond the Buxton Classroom

Through our unique partnership with Williams College, our students have the opportunity to take college-level courses, allowing them to deepen their academic interests and explore new areas of knowledge while also preparing for college. Additionally, Buxton students often engage in learning outside the classroom by attending lectures, performances, and events at Williams. We also encourage students to utilize the Clark Art Library, Williams College libraries, and local libraries to enrich their intellectual and educational journey. 

Grading Philosophy 

At Buxton, we take a different approach to assessment and grading. Instead of relying on traditional letter grades, which can overlook the distinct growth and improvement opportunities for each student, we offer an individualized description. We utilize a narrative approach that provides a holistic view of each student and their progress and areas for growth. Small class sizes allow for an opportunity for faculty to provide specific, meaningful feedback tailored to each student. Three times a year, students receive a detailed written report from their teachers, and students write a self-evaluation, allowing them an opportunity to reflect on their term and meet with a faculty member for a one-on-one discussion about their term. This feedback emphasizes growth and provides actionable advice that helps students thrive academically and personally.

We generate a report card for college admissions at the end of junior year. Due to the nature of our comprehensive evaluation system, students are rarely surprised by their grades, as they have received consistent and transparent feedback throughout their high school journey.
