Immersive Week

Twice a year, Buxton pauses its traditional schedule for Immersive Week, a one-of-a-kind program that sends students beyond the classroom and into hands-on, experiential learning. These week-long courses give students the freedom to explore new ideas, connect deeply with peers and teachers, and engage with the world in creative and meaningful ways.

Immserive Weeks reflect Buxton’s belief that learning happens everywhere, through doing, questioning, creating, and collaborating. Each course is designed to spark curiosity, challenge thinking, and provide students with opportunities to discover new passions and experiences.

This fall’s offerings ranged from Make a Pizza, where students experienced the entire process from harvesting grains to building a pizza from scratch learning about the importance of food production and systems — all culminating in a well-earned slice; to a week long Camping Trip to Shenandoah National Park, exploring the outdoors, learning survival skills, and studying the environment firsthand; to Fiber Arts, which included crocheting for the Berkshire Satellite Coral Reef project, embroidery, soft sculpture, and exploring the history of fiber arts as a form of political action; to Ghost Lore (“The Buxton Ghosties”), a project collecting and analyzing Buxton ghost stories while visiting haunted locations throughout the Berkshires; to Color Theory, where students examined color in art, nature, and perception, including trips to MASS MoCA, studying sunsets, exploring photoreceptors, and reflecting on the intersection of perception and reality through literature and poetry.

Whether through art, research, storytelling, or outdoor adventure, Immersives invite students to bring their curiosity to life. These immersive experiences connect knowledge, creativity, and real-world engagement in ways that are uniquely Buxton, personal, progressive, and deeply engaging.

Our next Immersive Week is planned for the spring. Check back then for more updates.

Country Roads...

This year, our Camping Trip Immersive ventured into the rainy Appalachians, where the week brought its share of challenges, including plenty of rain, even more mud, long days on the road, and moments of pure exhaustion. But alongside the puddles and long treks came laughter, teamwork, and discovery.

Students and faculty journeyed from the Berkshires through seven states, camping in two national parks, with gear partially provided by Williams College to ensure that every student had access to participate fully, regardless of prior experience or equipment. Along the way, they explored not only the landscapes and history around them, but also their own resilience, curiosity, and the bonds they share.

At Buxton, we know that some of the most meaningful learning happens when we step outside our comfort zones and embrace new experiences. That is the heart of hands-on learning, pushing boundaries, discovering strengths, and finding joy in the journey.
