A Night for Art at Mass MoCA

This past week, all of Buxton loaded up and headed to Mass MoCA to celebrate the 14th Annual Mass MoCA Teen Invitational. Cheering on their peers, taking in work from students across the region, and enjoying a night out together, and sharing in a night that was entirely about young artists and their work.

Buxton student Brennon Zahn ’27 received the Berkshire Eagle Best in Show Award for butcher block, an end-grain cutting board he designed and built entirely by hand.

The piece is made from six species of wood: maple, white oak, red oak, red grandis, mahogany, and walnut. Brennon selected each species himself, glued them into a single slab, planed it flat, then cut 1.5″ cross- grain strips and flipped alternating pieces to create the geometric pattern of his piece. He re-glued, sanded, and finished the board over the course of two days.

The Teen Invitational drew over 400 submissions from 13 regional schools. Best in show honorees were selected by a panel of five judges for exceeding expectations in skill, universal communication, and visible commitment to artistic practice.

Buxton was represented by 19 students across the exhibition, each bringing their own work and creative vision to the invitational. We are celebrating every single one of them!
