Buxton Goes ‘Light’ | Smartphone Ban in Full Swing

In the spring of 2022, Buxton School reached out to Light to explore the possibility of collaborating as we transition to a school-wide smartphone ban for both students and faculty. We’ve long been interested in creating a learning environment less dominated by digital distractions, and Light shares our vision for intentional and mindful technology use, as well as learning how to have a positive relationship with technology.

As the new school year begins, Light provides around 80 Light Phones for everyone in our community—students, faculty, and staff. During orientation, students set up their phones and complete a short survey about their previous smartphone usage. This marks the beginning of our collective journey to go light, together.

Update 2025:
At Buxton, we believe in creating a thoughtful and balanced relationship with technology. While we initially began with a full smartphone ban, we’ve since shifted to a more flexible smartphone policy.

Students are now allowed to have their smartphones during trips, town days, or while traveling—not just for safety and communication, but also for staying in touch with family or managing personal needs, like scheduling appointments. However, to continue preserving the integrity of our learning environment and community spaces, smartphones are still not permitted in classrooms or shared communal areas.

This approach reflects our ongoing commitment to fostering focus, presence, and meaningful connection at school, while also recognizing the practical needs of our students and families beyond campus.
