Fruit, Fiber, and Fine Art: Ruby Jackson’s ’11 Fresh Take on Paper-making

Ruby Jackson’s ’11 recent solo exhibition at Chatham Soccer features a large-scale papyrus work. The displayed works are made entirely from assorted fruits and vegetables, which have been pressed and dried to create one singular surface. This body of work reflects her exploratory practice, which merges traditional techniques with homespun methods — and, as of late, has focused on papermaking investigations.

Ruby began attending Buxton as a day student in her sophomore year. She credits her time there—particularly the art classes and the school’s unique educational environment—with shaping her values around community and art-making.

After Buxton, Ruby studied art at Bard College and went on to earn her MFA from Rutgers University. Her work has been exhibited at Chatham Soccer, Iowa; the Mount Lebanon Shaker Museum; Kings Leap; and Vox Populi. She is the recent recipient of the Martha Boschen Porter Fund Grant and the Mid-Atlantic Artist Fellowship.

Ruby currently resides in the Hudson Valley, where she works as an arts educator, primarily serving children and artists with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
