Academic Support

An Enriching Curriculum
The Buxton experience is, by design, both supportive and enriching. Small classes, dedicated and accessible teachers, and a rich and varied academic and artistic program make for a school that can accommodate and challenge a wide array of students. Above and beyond that, we provide targeted academic support and enrichment for those who need it.
Academic Support
The mission of our academic support program mirrors the mission of Buxton itself: to know and value each student as an individual, and to help them grow as student, thinker, artist, and citizen. Buxton is especially well-suited to serve the “twice exceptional” student: We are a community that prides itself on supporting difference of every kind — and that includes learning styles and learning challenges.

Buxton’s Academic Support offers:
- In-classroom assistance for teachers and students
- One-on-one tutoring
- Reading comprehension and writing strategies
- Customized plans for personal organization/development of time-management skills
- Mnemonic strategies
- Mathematical problem-solving strategies, word problem translation, mathematical vocabulary, and number sense
- Situational, subject, and assignment based assistance

Advanced Classes at Williams College
For students who are ready for a greater academic challenge (in subjects like calculus, science, et al.) Buxton can arrange for upper-level students to take, at most, one class per semester at Williams College, free of charge. Students receive full course credit at Buxton and are often, upon graduation, able to transfer credit to the college of their choice.
