Post-Graduate Program

Buxton is pleased to announce a new PG Year program at our school.

For many students, the high-school years are a whirlwind of activity, achievement, and academic pressure. When they graduate, they sometimes find themselves wondering what just happened and what it all meant. Going straight to college, which can feel like remaining on the same treadmill of expectation, is sometimes not the best next step.

That’s where the Buxton PG Year comes in. Buxton is an unusual school: true its long progressive roots, Buxton does education differently. With an emphasis on small discussion-oriented classes, community involvement, and a broad and deep arts program, Buxton students have the opportunity to have a high-school experience that is meaningful and enriching, an experience they feel in charge of and invested in. Deliberately small, Buxton is a school where kids can be truly themselves and be known and celebrated for that by peers and faculty alike.

The PG program can offer high-school graduates a one-year experience of our unusual school. During that year, PG students can burnish their academic record through taking a tailored program of electives in subjects they are interested in or want to explore differently or more deeply. Through our extensive arts offerings, PG students can explore a variety of disciplines, and can create an art portfolio for college if they wish. Finally, through our exceptional college-advising system, PG students can apply to college with the help of experienced and accomplished faculty, with a long track record of helping students get into the right colleges.

Our motto is “Live your education,” and that’s exactly what our PG students will be able to do: take control of their learning, take a year at a nontraditional school where they can follow their passions and deepen previous learning, become part of an enriching and intentional community, and set themselves up for success in college and beyond.
